The Beijing Municipal Education Commission has designated 50 schools and universities as model campuses for artificial intelligence, ChinaTechNews reported on Oct. 4.

The list includes 45 primary and secondary schools across 16 districts and five higher education institutions, among them Beijing Technology and Business University and the Beijing Film Academy. The model campuses are meant to "create scalable smart education models and explore next-generation school infrastructure."

The numbers behind the push

  • More than 1,400 primary and secondary schools in Beijing now offer AI coursework.
  • 1.83 million students have access to introductory AI classes.
  • The commission reports a 91% AI application rate among primary and secondary students.

What the schools are doing

The examples given are concrete. Tsinghua University High School runs an "AI Cloud School" platform with customized assessments and a "smart physical education gallery" that analyzes students' form in real time. Luhe High School has built AI modules into mathematics and classical literature. The Beijing Film Academy has set up institutes for intelligent image engineering and AI-generated content.

Why it matters

Model-school programs are how Chinese education authorities test practices before scaling them. For education leaders elsewhere, the list is worth watching. It shows where a large system is placing its bets, from AI in physical education to AI in classical literature.
